Finances Finances E. C. Slater The function of the Treasurer of IUBMB is the same as that of any other similar body, namely, to manage the nances of the Union, and has not changed since the rst Treasurer, Dr. Elmer Stotz, was in of ce. However, my experience since I took over at the beginning of 1999 as eighth and interim Treasurer has brought home to me just how much the task has grown since I was third Treasurer (1971–1979), something that I had perhaps insuf ciently appreciated during my period as President-elect (1985–1988) and President (1988–1991). There are many reasons for this. First, there is rather more money to spend. Secondly, the membership has increased. Thirdly and importantly, the large increase in the size of the Executive Committee in 1982 with designated duties to its members increased the number of persons with whom the Treasurer has to deal. My Treasurer’s report to the 8th General Assembly of the then International Congress of Biochemistry in July 1973, which was published in Information Bulletin No. 1 in July 1974, provides a basis for comparison of the situation in 1970 and 1998 (Table 1).
