Crimson Confederates: Harvard Men Who Fought for the South by Helen P. Trimpi and; A Northern... was "a dismal failure" because it failed to provide true protection for civilians or arresting officers (6). Historians and legal scholars interested in civil liberties during the Civil War will find this book useful. While at times White engages in detailed analysis of finer legal points, the book would be useful in an upper-division undergraduate course. White's impressive work suggests that there are still important research questions to be explored and new sources to be examined with regard to civilian loyalty during the Civil War, especially in the border states. In the introduction, White traces the surprisingly varied way that historians have described Merryman. Perhaps this historiographical variance is reflective of the complex nature of the federal prosecution of civilian disloyalty--real and perceived--during the war. White's book provides a useful model for historians to bring more clarity to this tangled chapter of American history.
