poetry Roy Jacobstein "I came to medicine in my twenties, public health in my thirties, and to writing only in my forties, eight years ago. That delay in coming to the pursuit I value most had several etiologies, most notably the influence of Nabokov, whose example of trilingual brilliance, borne on exotic experiences and origins, I thought I had to live up to. But I could not, and not only because of my more mundane origins in prosaic Detroit. When I did begin to write, however, I found my own body of experience from various "careers"--spot welder in Jimmy Hoffa's home local, hospital-based pediatrician, Jeopardy contestant, Indo-Chinese refugee camp doc, U.S. government technocrat, international development professional--to be territory as rich and rewarding as Nabokov's." Jacobstein's poems have appeared in the Gettysburg Review, Parnassus, Poetry Daily, Shenandoah, the Threepenny Review, TriQuarterly, Witness and elsewhere. Robert Hass selected him as a runner-up for the Iowa Review's 2005 Poetry Award, and his published work from Indiana Review was included in the textbook LITERATURE: Reading Fiction, Poetry & Drama.
