Vernacular and Latin Literary Discourses of the Muslim Other in Medieval Germany by Jerold C. Frakes (review)

Vernacular and Latin Literary Discourses of the Muslim Other in Medieval Germany by Jerold C.... Book Reviews Manuel braun's essay ("Epische Lyrik, lyrische Epik. Wolframs von Eschenbach Werk in transgenerischer Perspektive") serves as a good transition into the next section, as it examines the relationship between the lyric and narrative works of Wolfram von Eschenbach. More firmly in the "lyric in epic" camp, the following essay by Armin Schulz ("Minnedämmerung? Zur Funktion von Minnesang-Zitaten in Herborts von Fritzlar Liet von Troye") looks at how the poet Heinrich von Morungen's work figures in the story of Jason and Medea. Lastly, Hartmut bleumer's essay, "Die Zeit Ulrichs von Liechtenstein. Oder: Die Entdeckung der Realität aus dem Geist der Lyrik," illustrates Ulrich's construction of a literary reality in a narrative (Frauendienst) that draws heavily on the conventions and motifs of lyric poetry. The book's final section is devoted to generic transgression/interference in German mysticism. In her essay, "Der inwendig singende Geist auf dem Weg zu Gott. Lyrische Verdichtung im Fließenden Licht der Gottheit Mechthilds von Magdeburg," Sandra Linden presents Mechthild's text as a hybrid of lyric and narrative elements, which is most strikingly apparent in the musicality and the predominance of anaphora in the prose text.
