Rawls in Japan: A Brief Sketch of the Reception of John Rawls’ Philosophy

Rawls in Japan: A Brief Sketch of the Reception of John Rawls’ Philosophy Takasaki City University of Economics fukuma@tcue.ac.jp Introduction Why is John Rawls less popular than other philosophers in Japan? In what follows, I explain how Rawls' philosophy has been received in Japan, especially in relation to Japanese culture, politics, and economy. After giving an overview of the framework of Rawls' philosophical view, I outline the background of the reception of Western philosophy in Japan ( John Rawls and the Japanese Reception of Western Philosophy). Then, I proceed to explain the reason why the early reception of Rawls' work in Japan was mainly started not by ethicists and philosophers but by economists and jurists (The Earliest Reception of Rawls in Japan). I discuss the first Japanese translation of A Theory of Justice (TJ), the publication of which was prepared by economists. Unfortunately, this Japanese translation had many mistakes, stemming from the economists' lack of understanding of Rawls' ideas. As a result, most Japanese, including politicians and specialists in other professions (e.g., lawyers and NGO workers), did not have a very good understanding of Rawls' philosophy. For this reason, in Japan, academicians were the only ones familiar with Rawls' political philosophy; thus, he remained less popular than other contemporary political thinkers, http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Philosophy East and West University of Hawai'I Press
