Abstract

Book Reviews versity Press placed the footnotes at the bottom of the pages, making them easy to access and follow--a refreshing change from the burdensome separate section for footnotes. This reader also appreciated the visual guides in the form of illuminated manuscripts from the Topkapi museum in Istanbul to photos of actual kashkul (begging bowls) made out of drifting coconuts in the Indian Ocean that would serve as dishes for Sufi beggars (pp. 83 and 170). These visual and material examples, such as advertisements for zakat al-fitr packets of raw food materials that are provided to needy homes for end-of-Ramadan feasting, added tangibility to the textual descriptions the author provided. Singer is a prolific author on the subject of charity, having produced two books and an edited volume in the last five years. She has been engaged in establishing poverty-philanthropy studies as a field within Middle East studies; however, this work has moved to place the developments in her field into conversation with the larger field of charity-philanthropy studies and will hopefully inspire more studies in the future on this important subject. elyse semerdjian Whitman College Imagining Spain: Historical Myth and National Identity.
