Books Received HISTORICAL DICTIONARY OF JAPANESE TRADITIONAL THEATRE. 2nd ed. By Samuel L. Leiter. Historical Dictionaries of Literature and the Arts. Lanham, MD: Rowman and Littlefield, 2014. 766 pp. Cloth, $115; ebook, $109. This is a second edition of a work reviewed in this journal by Holly Blumner, who wrote: As a graduate student, struggling to learn the Japanese language, I longed for a book of Japanese theatre terminology in English, a volume that would concisely define terms that I could understand only with the help of cumbersome language and specialty dictionaries. Samuel L. Leiter's new book, Historical Dictionary of Japanese Traditional Theatre, fills this need and makes Japanese theatre terminology more accessible for Asian theatre scholars. The author should be commended for recognizing the need for a dictionary of Japanese traditional theatre terms, and having the patience and perseverance to compile such a compendium. I use it constantly to check facts, confirm dates, and read through subjects to learn something new. . . . Two years ago, when I was teaching a class on Japanese traditional theatre, several students asked, "Why isn't there a dictionary where I can go find these terms?" Now one exists.
