The Red Book is full of passion, full of love, and, at times, even a glimpse into hellfire! The most beautiful insights emerge from this passion and darkness, indeed, a penetration into the psyche and the Self. The book mirrors C. G. Jung's night-sea journey, his inner experience of the Self, the structure of which he presented in his book Aion in a most impressive way some forty years later. Toward the end of The Red Book, through Jung's active imaginations, he experiences an increasing atmosphere of love such that he finally confesses to Phanes: "You are a lover." This love is the basis of analytical psychology.
