MATERIALS'kND M;THODS S respond transiently to extraular effecters with increases in then become refractory to further stimulation (24,25). Luteinizing hormone (LH) human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) similarly activate desensitize adenylate cyclase in LH-responsive ovarian tissues (16, 19). Preovulatory follicles that respond both to LH folliclestimulating hormone (FSH) (3, 6, 7, 12, 15, 17, 21, 27) become refractory only to homologous hormone when cultured intact with LH or FSH (28). Isolated s from preovulatory follicles exposed to LH or FSH in vivo or in vitro become desensitized heterologously (5, 9). That is, exposure to LH or FSH reduces the responsiveness both to LH to FSH. Recent investigators have begun to probe the question of whether s from FSH-responsive immaNUMEROUS 0193-1849/83/0000-0000$01.50 Copyright 0 Granuksa incubation. s were harvested from small (l-2 mm) follicles from ovaries of cycling pigs (1). s were centrifuged (220 g for 15 min) washed once with ice-cold minimum essential medium (MEM) containing Earleâs salts (Gr Isl Biological), 0.4% bovine serum albumin (BSA, Sigma), 50 /g/d genta micin (Schering), 15 mM HEPES (pH 7.4).
