and Gynecology, New York University Medical Center, METHODS steroids: to serum a& bumin and to placenta. Am. J. Physiol. 238 (Endocrinol. Metab. E208-E213, 1980.-The rates and retenti a series steroids were measured using an in vitro perfusi system an isolated cotyled human placenta. The steroids were added to the maternal inflow and rates appearance in maternal and fetal outflows were measured, from which data were calculated the rate and retenti. With a low ccentrati albumin (0.01 g/dl) in the maternal and fetal perfusates, rates diethylstilbestrol and ethynylestradiol were initially low, with csiderable retenti the steroids within the placenta. rates increased with durati perfusi. With high ccentratis albumin (1 g/dl), retenti was greatly reduced and rates very rapidly reached high levels. Albumin in the fetal circulati was the ive factor in increasing rate; maternal albumin reduced it. The results with estre and progestere were qualitatively similar but not as striking, possibly because the large endogenous ccentratis these two hormes. retenti dexamethase, a more polar steroid that does not bind to placenta and binds poorly to albumin, was low and there was little difference between from low- and high-protein perfusates. 1): perfused human placenta; steroid transport; protein ; INVESTIGATI TRANS
