The top panels represent the annual cycle. After an active spring and summer period of reproduction and growth, the animal becomes obese in the fall and then disappears into its hibernation burrow. Hibernation too is dynamic, with multiday bouts of torpor punctuated by rapid arousal ( bottom left ) and a short period of euthermia ( top middle ). After several months in hibernation, the animal emerges in spring, and the cycle begins anew. For details see: Hindle AG, Grabek KR, Epperson LE, Karimpour-Fard A, Martin SL.
