Editorial Raymond Peter William Scott, or Ray Scott as he is Vaore usually known, was born on the 20th June 1924 at Erith, Kent, UK. He worked at Woolwich Arsenal during the 1939-45 war, his tales of his work there are quite hair-raising. He obtained his BSc degree in Chemistry from London University in 1946 whilst Working for Burroughs Welcome where he stayed for four years followed by a further four years working as an analyst at a Portland Cement factory. He joined Benzole Producers Ltd. in the early 1950's and worked his way up in the Company to become head of the Physical chemistry group. In 1954 he attended a lecture given by A.J.P. Martin on gas chromatography when he Was shown a chromatogram of a benzole mixture which demonstrated that Martin knew more about the ROmposition of benzole than the producers themselves. ay immediately saw the importance of the technique and went to visit Martin to get a briefing on this new t~ethod of analysis. There then followed a period of intensive work and the Publication of many papers on investigations into this new technique. His wife Barbara (whom he married in 1946) suggested to him
