The VIII International Cladocera meeting was held at
the Autonomous University of Aguascalientes, Agu-
ascalientes, Mexico, on 19–25 October, 2008. This
was attended by 120 participants from 22 nations
(Fig. 1). The meeting had in total 14 technical
sessions lasting from 21 to 25 October, with the
exception of 23 October which held the mid-congress
excursion. There were two invited lectures: the
Inaugural Lecture on ‘‘Cladocera in a domesticated
world’’ by the late Stanley I. Dodson and the state of
the art presentation on ‘‘Geometry of a cladoceran’s
risk to fish predation’’ by Maciej Z. Gliwicz. Besides
these, there were both oral and poster presentations
on five different themes: (a) cladoceran systematics
and taxonomy, (b) molecular biology, evolution,
genetics and biochemistry, (c) field and experimental
ecology, (d) predation, seasonal changes and com-
munity ecology and (e) ecotoxicology and paleolim-
nology. The last technical session, co-chaired by S.I.
Dodson, S.S.S. Sarma and P. Spaak, was exclusively
dedicated to the procedures and suggestions related to
proceedings of the meeting for Hydrobiologia.
Traditionally, the proceedings of all previous
International Cladoceran Symposia (ICS, place and
year) have been brought out by the prestigious journal
Hydrobiologia [vol. 145, 1987 (ICS 1: Budapest,
Hungary, 1985); vol. 225, 1991 (ICS 2: Tatranska
Lomnica, Czechoslovakia, 1989); vol. 307, 1995
(ICS 3: Bergen, Norway, 1993); vol. 360, 1997 (ICS
4: Postojna, Slovenia, 1996); vol. 442, 2001 (ICS 5:
Ploen, Germany, 1999); vol. 526, 2004 (ICS 6:
Wierzba, Poland, 2002); vol. 594, 2007 (ICS 7:
Herzberg, Switzerland, 2005)]. Hence it was consid-
ered pertinent to approach Hydrobiologia for the
proceedings of the present symposium too.
Based on the advice received from Prof. Koen
Martens, the Editor-in-Chief of Hydrobiologia, invi-
tations for manuscript submission were offered only
to the selected participants on the recommendations
of the chairpersons of the technical sessions. Some
participants submitted their contributions on the last
day of the symposium, while others did so within the
next 3 months. Initial screening of most of the
manuscripts was done by Stanley. Each manuscript
was sent to three or four experts in a specific area of
cladoceran research. Only those manuscripts that
were positively recommended by the reviewers were
