METHODS: We studied retrospectively 96 ICU pts, 84 men (87.5%)-12 women (12.5%) who developed PNTH due to MV. Mean age: 45.2±19.8 years. Mean stay: 12.3±5.1 days. Underlying diseases: multiple trauma without thoracic injury 47, complicated surgery 34, vascular cerebral accident 8, other 7. Pts with thoracic injury, thoracic surgical procedures and insertion of central venous catheter in the internal jugular or subclavian vein were excluded. Ten pts (10.4%) had COPD. All pts underwent MV and were divided according to their age in 2 groups: Group A 62 (64.6%) ⤠65 years old and group B 34 (35.4%) > 65 years. We used clinical and laboratory findings for the diagnosis of PNTH (thorax auscultation, blood gases, chest X-ray on ptsâ bed, CVP, pulmonary resistance, deterioration of respiratory failure), while in 6 pts (6.2%) PNTH was diagnosed after a thorax CT
