Book review - New books - Announcement Book review Imaging in pediatric oncology. J.H. Miller (ed) L.White (assoc.ed) Baltimore London: Williams and Wilkins 1985. 534 pp, with figs. US$ 85.00 Progress in paediatric oncology usually runs parallel with the development of new imaging methods. Pediatric Oncologic Radiology by Parker-Castellino appeared eight years ago. In this book, 18 authors discussed radiological diagnosis in pediatric oncology. The 'sequel' (reviewed here) presents the work of 24 additional authors (with the exception of Parker). The first section contains four chapters and describes the clinical relevance of imaging, taking into account the surgical and radiotherapeutic aspects, as well as the risk of tumour formation in genetic and non-genetic disorders. Section 2 presents the progress made in imaging methods: the current status of nuclear imaging, ultrasound imaging, computed tomography and nuclear magnetic resonance. The comparative value of these various methods, the risk benefit and the cost effectiveness are all discussed, and potential biological damage to the organs is analysed. Sections 3-7 follow, with 2-5 chapters, respectively, on the various regions of the body, organs and their tumours. Section 8 presents multisystem malignancies and section 9 deals with possible complications in cancer therapy. Each chapter is concluded with a bibliography that contains work published up to 1983. The preferred methods of treatment for each turnout are listed in order of recommendation. Tables provide classification and staging; clinical and therapeutic data are also included in the tables to some extent. The diversity of the high-quality figures is fascinating....
