DEAR EDITORS:
An article by K. I. Sadykhov, A. N. Agaev, and S. M. Velieva, “Moderately alkaline sulfonate additive
for motor oils,” was published in Chemistry and Technology of Fuels and Oils, No. 1 (2001). The distortion
of its contents elicited a number of comments, including two major comments:
1. In comparing the data in Tables 1 and 2, we find mutually exclusive indexes for the additives
and M-10G2 oil with the same additives for the base number and sulfate ash content. These properties of oils are
additive. To obtain samples of oil with a base number of the order of 9.1 – 9.4 mg KOH/g (Table 2), approximately
6% additives with a base number of 150 – 153 mg KOH/g (Table 1) would have to be added. With this amount of
additives, the sulfate ash content of the oils with calcium, strontium, and barium sulfonates would respectively
be 1.4, 2.25, and 2.45%, which clearly contradicts the data in Table 2, where the sulfate ash content of all samples
falls within 1.43 – 1.59%. If we depart from the almost equal sulfate ash content of the oil samples, their base
numbers will differ strongly.
2. We know that barium detergents are universally excluded from motor oils for environmental reasons. In
this respect, it is impossible to understand the purpose of developing a new generation of barium sulfonate today.
