Kevin Thompson Published online: 21 September 2011 # Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2011 While it is widely accepted that body dissatisfaction and eating disorders are the result of a variety of factors— biological, familial, psychological, and sociocultural—and that not one particular factor can adequately account for the development of such issues (Striegel-Moore and Bulik 2007), researchers agree that media influences do, at least in part, impact the development of eating disorders. It has been well documented that exposure to thin-ideal media increases body dissatisfaction, internalization of the thin ideal, and disordered eating behaviors in female samples (Grabe et al. 2008; Levine and Murnen 2009), and nowhere is the thin ideal more present than Hollywood film. In the book Body Shots: Hollywood and the Culture of Eating Disorders, Emily Fox-Kales details the impact of popular Hollywood films on societal views regarding beauty and the ideal body.
