Editorial This issue marks the beginning of Volume 20 of Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology. In the past the development of the journal has been quite remarkable, in particular as a result of the rapid developments in the field of biotechnology. The change in the title as of Volume 19 is an indication of the journal's development from a mainly European to a truly international publication. In order to achieve even shorter publication times through an alteration in the review system, the processing of manuscripts is in future to be broken down into three separate areas: The Americas Japan and the Far East Europe and all other countries Papers from these respective areas should in future be submitted to the appropriate International Editor, who will then forward them to the referees. Classic and modern genetics are increasingly becoming a part of the scope of the journal, insofar as they are related to Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology. We hope that this change will help the journal to develop further and will facilitate the rapid dissemination of scientific and technological knowledge from the fields covered in Applied Microbiology and Bio- technology.
