Taushev UDC 665.642 The delayed coking process has been used thus far in prospective schemes for the zero-residue processing of crude oil. With this process, the yield of vacuum distillate from atmospheric-vacuum tubestill units can be increased, and the vacuum resid can be processed to obtain a 65% yield of distillate (on vacuum resid) as a fedstock for the production of motor fuels and coke. The delayed coking process is very flexible, so that various types of petroleum resids can be processed, fi'om atmospheric resids to heavy vacuum tars and asphalts, by adjusting the process conditions, in particular the recycle ratio (RR).* In processing a heavy feed in a delayed coking unit, more of the gasoil fraction is recycled; with a lighter feed, less gasoil is recycled, with high values of the RR (1.5-2), the coke quality is improved [1]; in particular, the content of volatile matter is reduced, the mechanical strength is increased, and the content of the large-lump fraction (larger than 25 mm) is increased. Wtth a high RR, however, higher operating costs are incurred in heating, cooling, and pumping the recycle.$
