Book Reviews Sex Roles, Vol. 41, Nos. 7/8, 1999 G rowing up in a lesbian fam ily: Effects on child developm ent. Fiona L. Tasker and Susan G olombok, New York, Guilford, 1998, 194 pp., $18.95 pb. A recent article on the front page of the Washington Post described the ``gay by boom’ ’ Ð the recent growth in the number of lesbian and gay couple s with childrenÐ with the headline , ``Gay Couple s with Childre n Find the World is a Friendle r Place .’ ’ The story goes on to describe a number of gay and lesbian families in the Washington D.C. region, and touche s upon the question of whether childre n raised in such familie s experience adjustme nt proble ms. Until recently, very little research has focused on the effects of gay and lesbian parenting upon the well being of the children. The present book helps to ® ll this research gap by describing a longitudinal study compar- ing divorce d lesbian-he aded families with divorce d hetrosexual female- headed families.
