Book reviews High Speed Narrow Bore Capillary Gas Chromatography by A. van Es Htithig, Heidelberg, Germany. 1992; pp. 158 + IX; ISBN 37785-2027-X. Price: DM 88.00 It is now 33 years since Desty and his co-workers first demonstrated the separation of fourteen C 5 to C 7 hydrocarbons in two seconds on a 1.2 m x 37 lam glass capillary coated with squalane. This feat went unchallenged until the late 1970s when Guiochon repeated much of Desty's work but the practical difficulties involved meant that very few tried to emulate the achievements of these pioneers. In the last ten years much work has been done in this area, notably by Cramers and his school at Eindhoven and high speed GC separations have now been put on the firm theoretical and practical footing described in this monograph. After a short introduction, the next chapter is concerned with the theory of high speed separation. I have, on a number of occassions, commented adversely on the almost obligatory inclusion of a theory chapter but in this case it is well justified and covers the effects of k, column temperature, column diameter, carrier gas and inlet and outlet pressures on speed of analysis.
