Rees's book combines an interest in canonical works with an effort to recover works that have disappeared from the limelight. in this way, she fulfills an important obligation of the researcher to keep negotiating our cultural heritage and to unearth works that have wrongfully fallen into oblivion. Rees's approach is also inclusive when it comes to genres. in her unfolding of the literary representations of the cabin, she crosses the threshold between so-called high and low culture. Her book covers a wide field of genres from lyrical poetry to folktales, from autobiographical works to crime fiction and film. However, novels are in the majority, and maybe it is due to the dominance of this genre that there is a tendency in the book to focus on the representation of action that takes place in the cabins. the aesthetic dimension of the works analyzed receives less attention, and the literary qualities of these texts are played down.
