Fisker-Nielsen's Religion and Politics in Contemporary Japan is a very well-written and thoroughly researched study of the actions and feelings of Soka Gakkai members and their connections with Komeito as well as ¯ ¯ ¯ a good presentation of the role of the Komeito and the Soka Gakkai role ¯ ¯ ¯ in contemporary Japanese politics. The Komeito is an important actor in ¯ ¯ Japanese politics, but most scholars who write on Japanese politics tend to greatly ignore the role it plays. In many media reports in the West, the Komeito is often portrayed as a "Buddhist political party" which, as Fisker¯ ¯ Nielsen points out, it is not. Any serious student of Japanese politics must read this book.
