Abstract
Vale Russell Mathews, AO CBE Emeritus Professor Russell Mathews died in Canberra in March 2000, aged 79 years. Russell had a distinguished career and was a pivotal figure in developing accounting as an academic discipline in Australia. After leaving Haileybury College in Melbourne in 1937, Russell worked for Australian Estates Company Ltd. He qualified by examination as a member of the Commonwealth Institute of Australia. From 1941 to 1945 he served in the Australian Army in New Guinea and Bouganville successively as a platoon commander, intelligence officer and finally as adjutant of the 58/59 Infantry Battalion with the rank of captain. He was mentioned in despatches for bravery and was twice wounded. He spent nearly a year in hospital in 1945 as a result of a leg wound and walked with a pronounced limp for the rest of his life. After the war he studied commerce at the University of Melbourne, graduating with first class honours in 1949. He was appointed research assistant to Sir Douglas Copland who was the first Vice-Chancellor at the Australian National University. In 1951 he was posted to London where he recruited staff and students for ANU. In 1953, he was appointed ReaderPreview Only.
