Did you ever see a basketball team where one man would hog all of the shots and play it like the whole team was his? For many years I followed Jerry West with great interest and admiration and watched him as in each game he felt out who was the hot shooter, then he would feed them the ball, and set up the offense so that everybody else fed to that hot man. Then if things were tied up tight at the last second, he would step in and make the shot that gave the team the winning margin. Orthopaedics is somewhat akin to these situations. For a few years basic science was hot, then children's orthopaedics was hot, the hand got hot, so did research, then sports medicine, scoliosis, and on down the line.
