Abstract

THREE Situation IN A ROW or WHO Situation #2 GETS THE PROMOTION Situation #3 Cordial but firm greetings by teacher at the door. Plan visibly displayed for all to see. Music, chairs, stands in readiness for rehearsal. Well-established routine for tuning up, warm-up. First-a student favorite. Second-sight reading. Third-a selection for work and drill. Fourth-complete reading of a prerehearsed piece. Fifth-question-and-answer time. Sixth-a student favorite. Dismissal in time for orderly storage, of equipment, music. Excuses Submitted: None The Bell Rings. #1 Loud horseplay in hall outside music room door. No teacher in room, at door, or in sight. No evidence of room set up for rehearsal. No message or plan on the blackboard. Teacher-“beats the bell” by 30 seconds. Teacher allows one child to absorb his time with a personal problem while 59 others fidget, talk, blast, or create disturbance. One-quarter hour of confusion before any instruction is given, received, or attempted. Sequence of lesson indicates no plan, no progress, no organization. Excuses Submitted A-“I had to have a smoke.” B-“These are tough kids.” C-“I forgot my lesson plan.” D-“Who plans? I just rehearse!” Scowling teacher at the door. Deathly quiet in the room. No plan in evidence
