The Working of a Child Guidance Clinic SAGE Publications, Inc.1967DOI: 10.1177/001789696702600403 D.T.Maclay Uffculme Clinic, Birmingham, 13 CHILD Guidance, the term usually employed to describe the treatment of children who have emotional problems or nervous difficulties, is not an ideal description of the process, but no better has yet been found. Whether we speak of a clinic, or a centre or, as the hospitals tend to do, of a child psychiatric clinic, we are simply using different terms to describe what is virtually the same kind of service. Assessment of the Cfiild's Problems When a child is referred to the clinic the clinic staff will be told what are the external appearances, or symptoms, by which the child's problem is manifesting itself. Their first major objective will be to discover what are the underlying features of his disturbed personality development. When they have made a provisional assessment as to what is the real nature of the problem and of what are its possible causes, they can then form some conclusions as to how these issues can best be dealt with for the benefit of the child and of his family also.
