Gill, Brunel Research Unit for the Blind, concludes an article 'New Moon' appear- in the Autumn 1985 edition of The British Journal of Visual Impairment with a brief statement on the future of Moon. In this, reference is made to the development of the Possum Moonwriter, which may play its part in encouraging more people to use Moon. The Moonwriter provides a personal writing facility to enable blind people to correspond in Moon as well as to produce for themselves such items as shopping lists and other aides memoire, previously denied them. Until the advent of the Moonwriter, Moon readers had no means of writing Moon. Following the evaluation of the Moonwriter, in November 1984, there was an enthusiastic response from those concerned: . "everyone liked the idea of the independence and pleasure that Moonwriting extended to the visually handicapped ..." "it was found easy to master, being simple in design and to operate ..." "it could be used for a variety of purposes - shopping lists, personal letters and cards; keeping a diary..." The Moonwriter is a portable typewriter- size device. The visually
