The John R. Mayor Report on the Influence of Accreditation in Teacher Education on Higher Education—A Contribution to Understanding SAGE Publications, Inc.1965DOI: 10.1177/002248716501600334 WendellAllen State Department of Public Instruction, Olympia, Washington John R. Mayor has succeeded in making a monumental contribution to our understanding of the whole area of accreditation, and especially of its application in the several fields of teacher preparation. This fact is amply attested to by Lyle H. Lanier, chairman of the advisory committee for the study, in his prefatory statement. The contributions of this Study will lie in (a) the delineation of the complex interrelations among the educational, professional, and governmental interests concerned with teacher education, (b) the clarification of the issues and developments related to the major controversies over national accreditation in this field, and (c) the comprehensive inventory of the effects of accreditation of teacher education-at state, regional, and national levels- on institutions of higher education. In the light of this impressive systematic analysis, all of the groups concerned should be able to work more constructively toward their common goal: the improvement of the quality of education in the schools, through better education of prospective teachers.
