Moore Nurses have a long and respected history of service during wartime that dates back to the American Civil War. The North and South saw more than 2,000 women provide fearless care and support to the Ameri- cans who fought this epic conflict. With the tactical changes in how wars are currently fought and the evo- lution of advanced practice psychiatric nursing as a distinct specialty, we are seeing a continuation of this courage and dedication in Iraq and Afghanistan. Through their work as clinicians, prevention special- ists, and commanders in combat areas, these profes- sionals contribute not only to the emotional well-being of service members but also to the success of military operations. CLINICIANS Advanced practice psychiatric nurses play a crucial role in maintaining the mental health balance of ser- vice members in both Iraq and Afghanistan. With a limited formulary of psychotropic medications, these nurses are treating a myriad of disorders such as sleep deprivation, depression, and acute anxiety. Aside from the challenges of deployment in a hostile environment, many service members are also faced with preexisting marital,family,and
