The Black Thing: A Small Point, Maybe SAGE Publications, Inc.1969DOI: 10.1177/002248716902000403 James C.JRHall EDCOM Systems, Inc., Princeton, New Jersey A note- I, a black man in education, was asked to write an article focusing on white racism, teacher education programs for teachers of inner city youth and teachers for suburbs. It would have been easy to engage in the luxury of telling it as it is, or even isn't, by reinforcing the view implied, but instead I responded by raising a small point that has irritated the hell out of me about the approach so many of us take to interpreting and perceiving the problem. Were we ever really to recognize this point and deal with it realistically, we might have a chance to face the racism of all of us and thus achieve, as a result of this act of honesty, the education of teachers who could teach all of us. How does a society steeped in racism go about perpetuating itself in the face of adversities of conscience, social upheaval, and questions of ethics? Through the public school system, which is often the major means by which a culture inculcates the next generation with those ideas
