byDr. Robert E.Valett Openanewclassorprogramwithoutadequatein-service orientation - everyone already knows whatisspecial about special education. Neverprepareawrittendescriptionofyourprogramanditsgoalsandmethods-thatwouldonlycausefurtherdiscussion and confusion. Locatetheprograminanoldportableclassroomsomewhatremovedfromthemain schoolbuilding-where it can be easilyidentified asbeing “special.” If busing pupilsisnecessary, schedulerides of atleastanhour oneway-thenwhen childrenfinallyarrive, begin the day with aquiet language arts period. Do not provide parent education orparent counselingprograms-neverencourageparentparticipationonspecial education advisory or other school committees. Avoid becoming involved in any experimental programor pilot models for improving instruction-insist that allteachers follow the standard curriculum. Since all test data is biased, be sure you do not carefullyconsiderdiagnosticandprescriptivetestreports-justteachthesamethingstoeveryoneinthesamedemocratic way. Prohibitallnoisyandnon-essentialactivitiessuchasart, drama,music, stimulating games, and discussion -emphasizeonly the basic academicskills.
