In less than a century, what had been a little village grew into a major urban centre. Today, the ports of Saint-Nazaire and its near neighbour, Nantes, together form the leading port complex on the French Atlantic coast. The most significant feature of industrial activity associated with the port of Saint-Nazaire is that represented by the Chantiers de l'Atlantique Corporation, one of the most significant European shipyards which is especially renowned for its prestigious cruising ships. The company was created in 1861 by the Pereire brothers, under the corporate name of Chantiers de Penhoet, and it has a long and fascinating history.
