Sensor faults compensation for MIMO fault-tolerant control systems

Abstract

This paper puts forward a model-based sensor fault-tolerant control design framework for multi-input and multi-output systems. This framework facilitates the use of fault indicating residuals to compensate for faulty sensor feedback signals and allows the integrated design of a fault-tolerant control system to be achieved with established robust H methods. A case study to demonstrate the potential of such a design is illustrated via simulation of a space shuttle re-entry manoeuvre control system. In this simulation, different sensor fault situations have been simulated to test the controller tolerance towards sensor faults. Favourable results demonstrate satisfactory operations in the flight control system in the presence of sensor faults.
