Brown School of Library, Archive and Information Studies, University College, London This is the latest edition to the Butterworths series entitled "Information sources for research and development". As the majority of its predecessors limit themselves to the "use of literature" in a single discipline, this present volume covers a wider area of knowledge than has been the norm in this series to date. The first, introductory chapter "Communication and the bibliographic system of the social sciences" is contributed by the editor and, as its title suggests, relates to the social sciences in general. The remaining thirteen chapters, each by different authors, all of whom are either academics or librarians concerned directly with the topics they discuss, may be divided into two broad groups; those based upon disciplines and those based upon categories of documents. The discipline-based chapters are first in the sequence. Each of chapters two to ten covers an individual area of knowledge within the social sciences. These nine areas are, namely, economics, sociology, politics, social anthropology, management, education, environmental planning, public administration
