Abstract
REVIEWS 135 as well as numerous suggestions for adaptation, yet several experienced facilitators suggested that because of ECOTONOS' complexity they would have found it difficult to conduct ECOTONOS without prior experience of either observing or participating in it. Guidelines for debriefing each phase of the simulation are described in the manual. Although experienced facilitators may choose to develop their own debriefing questions, others will appreciate the numerous sample ques- tions included. The manual would be a stronger resource if it placed greater emphasis on the importance of an effective and unhurried debriefing. Effec- tive debriefing is vital for helping participants apply simulation insights to real-life situations and for bringing closure to the activity. Myth creation, problem solving, and process mapping are steps toward the all-important debriefing process and not an end unto themselves. Clearer articulation of this issue in the instructions would be helpful. In the hands of a novice facilitator, ECOTONOS is a highly effective exercise. In the hands of a truly skilled facilitator, it is a multifaceted, extremely adaptable instrument capable of serving an almost endless number of purposes. ECOTONOS is an important, timely, and welcome addition to the field of multicultural learning. Carol S. Tan
