It has been suggested that Mme Tison Braun's approach is too traditionally 'psychological' to do justice either to her aims or to Sarraute; and to some extent I would concur, particularly since she does not always define her terms very clearly. She is also hampered on occasion by involuntary parody, which reinforces the impression that this is not infrequently more of a paraphrase than an analysis. But where analysis is evident it is perceptive, and her method allows the evolution of Sar- raute's technique and intent to emerge.
