When he took over as Editor of the Journal of Hand Surgery he wrote, “I am honored to have been selected Editor-in-Chief and I am aware of the tremendous responsibility of this position. I am also aware that the success of the Journal is dependent on many individuals. It can only be as stimulating as the manuscripts that are submitted, as scientifically accurate as the critiques of the Associate Editors, and as readable as the publisher’s careful attention to detail. Ultimately, the Journal’s success is apparent when the hand surgeons who read it become better scientists, clinicians, and teachers.” (Manske, 1996).About impact factors: “A potentially more appropriate way to measure a journal’s value and its scientific impact would be to examine the reading habits of
