(paper), ISBN 1-55540-391-3 SAGE Publications, Inc.1992DOI: 10.1177/030908929201705414 This dissertation attempts a revision of David Gunn's reading of 1 Samuel 9-15 on Saul's reign and rejection. The reading for coherence which Long attempts is fully reasonable, but unconvincing. As with Gunn's work, one must be wary of the seeming neutrality of avowed ahistoricism in a work which reads the text as if located within a real world, while at the same time asserting ignorance of both literary context and historical referent. The ignorance has integrity, but one has doubts about the reading. TLT
