Living with Alzheimer's
Abstract
Video review Living with Alzheimer's. A three- part series produced by The Long Island Alzheimer's Foundation. Part I-Living With Alzheimer's: Understanding Alzheimer 's. 30 minutes Living With Alzheimer's is an educational video defining what Alzheimer's disease is and what re- sources are available for those who are affected by it. Interviews with geriatric physicians, psychiatrists, and neurologists explain the clinical aspects of dementia, and the death of the brain cells that control memory. Other interviews are with care- givers such as a husband, a son, and several daughters of various patients. Interviews with the experts are inter- mixed with examples and scenes of caregivers and their loved ones. For instance, an older man is shown feeding his wife as he openly talks about her illness as if she weren't even present. He has total care of her every need. Because of that scene, I was par- ticularly interested in the comment by the geriatric physician who said that sometimes a caregiver can't ac- cept the disease and may have a ten- dency to cover up for the spouse and not face the fact that he or she has a serious illness.
