State Administrative DevelopmentsKansas SAGE Publications, Inc.1977DOI: 10.1177/027507407701100313 J.W.Drury University of Kansas In the summer of 1976 Governor Bennett appointed a blue ribbon Task Force on Effective Management. Management officials from some of the bigger private businesses of the state were asked to help the state by studying and recommending ways that state government could become more effective. Twenty specific areas were identified and assigned to steering committees which were formed for each of these areas. These committees reviewed the operations of Kansas State Government in these areas and made recommendations to the Task Force. The Task Force in April made recommendations in nine of the areas they had been assigned - computers, record management and microfilming, floor space management, energy conservation systems, systems design, central mails, and several aspects of personnel. They estimated that the state could save $10.35 million during the first year of the operation. Their group had spent almost 6,000 man hours in their studies. The Governor announced in June the implementation of one of the major recommendations of the Task Force in the computer area.
