JOHANNES FEEST University of Bremen, Germany After many years of neglect, penal labour is again receiving academic as well as practical attention. Gerard de Jonge has published his important doctoral dissertation on the relationship between prisoners' work and the administration of justice (De Jonge, 1994). In addition, two major collections of articles have recently been compiled. The 1997 edition of the Jahrbuch fir Rechts- und Kriminalsoziologie, a yearbook compiled by the Viennese group of socio-legal scholars, deals with developments concerning prison labour in Austria and Germany and to a lesser extent also with those in Switzerland and the Netherlands (Hammerschick and Pilgram, 1997). While all of the articles in this yearbook are in German, the book starts with an introductory essay in English by Dario Melossi (1997) entitled 'Economy, labour and penalty'. The other, as yet unpublished, collection presents the results of a workshop at the International Institute for the Sociology of Law in Onati, organized by the German penologist, Frieder Diinkel, and the South African criminologist, Dirk van Zyl Smit.
