Abstract
Comments and IdeasGuide Dog Safety Saddle SAGE Publications, Inc.1986DOI: 10.1177/026461968600400130 from Forward Guide Dogs for the Blind Association CONSPIC DESIGN, a firm in the north of England, have spent the past year developing a device they call the Safety Saddle. It is designed to be used in areas that are poorly lit, for crossing roads or for use in lesser known areas, but not constantly. Made of white leather, the device fits easily to the harness over the dog's shoulders and fastens to the breast pad straps. The saddle has nine red light emitting diodes on either side arranged in a diamond shape which pulsate once every second. The unit also emits a low pitched bleep to inform the user that the device is working. The manufacturers claim that the high intensity diodes can be seen from 60 yards away and have an 80° viewing angle. A 9-volt PP3 battery carried beneath the switch should give about 18 hours' continuous use. Tested The saddle has been tried and tested by three guide dog owners, who have reported favourably. The GDBA's own trials, whilst limited, have proved encouraging. The Safety Saddle costs £26.00 + £1.00 p&p. Further information and
