DIALOG Editor 's Introduction ROGER EVERED Most readers of JMI will surely have learned by now of the death last year of Eric Trist. Eric died in Cannel, California, on June 4, 1993. He was 83 years old. The memorial service, at the Little Chapel by the Sea at Point Pinos, fittingly situated next to a lighthouse, was truly a celebration of his life. His ashes were scattered at sea off Point Lobos, a very beautiful spot near Carmel. In this issue of JMI, we share with you two separate dialogues between colleagues of Eric Trist, who got together by telephone within 2 weeks of his death to share with each other their remembrances of him. In thefirst dialogue, six colleagues who have known Eric since his early days in England share their thoughts and feelings about his life. And in the second dialogue, seven colleagues from Eric's later years in North America remind each other of their experiences of him. Eric Lansdown Trist was born in Dover, England, on September 11, 1909. He studied at Pembrook College, Cambridge University, earn-ing dual degrees in psychology and English literature (both with high distinction) and eventually a Ph.D. in social
