Slocum, delivered by Clmton L. Compere, MD, Vice President of the American Orthopedic Societt, for Sports Medicine at their annual meeting in San Francisco, April 8, 797~- This occasion is of special pleasure to me as I have been personally acquainted with Don for thirty years, when we were both on active duty during the war. Don contributed most effectively at Letter- man General Hospital and later as Chief of the Amputation Service at Walter Reed Hospital during the period when I was Chief of the Amputation Service at McGuire General Hospital. From his military experience, he wrote and published the textbook on Amputation Surgery which is still the best major publication on this subject. Following his military service, he returned to Eugene, Oregon, where he developed a major interest in athletic problems and specifically became involved in the biomechanics of running ; his teaching in this regard has been superior to any other contributions He was a prime mover in the American Medical Association Committee on the Medical Aspects of Sports and later was
