Following adaptation to the single market and monetary union, the European Union is facing new chal- lenges, including having to adjust to the 'knowledge society'. The proposals set out in the communication are worth examining in more detail, which will be done by an examin- ation of the medium term agenda, which will thereafter be linked to the short-term develop- ments and perspectives.
