Defining Parent Training for Practice and Research

Abstract

Parent training is afamiliar term in nursing and other social sciences. Yet, the concept represented by the term in the literature is ambiguous. In this article the author defines and operationalizes the concept ofparent training, emphasizing its relevance in providing care to children with complex psychiatric disorders. The discussion is illustrated with case examples and provides an operational definition of the concept of parent training tofacilitate a link among theoretic concept, clinical practice, and empiric research.
