Pastakia This the fifth edition of 'Report 71' which has become the standard reference work for bacteriological analysis of water in the United Kingdom. ' This edition discusses the value and methods for sampling and monitoring of water supplies. This aspect is extremely well covered, and should become essential reading for anyone interested or working in this field. Sampling is discussed in a simple and unambiguous manner. The book has considered a number of locations for sampling, and provides a sound guide for this extremely important aspect of monitoring. The analysis section of the work now includes the Pseudomonas Group which is becoming increasingly important in mains supplies; particularly to some industrial premises (pharmaceutical, hospitals, food drink, etc). The technical section includes two short sections on laboratory hygiene and safety, which is commendable. The appendices include the formulation of media, Most Probable Number tables, and a comprehensive reference list. This edition is a considerable improvement over the fourth (1969) edition.
