We expect an index to be just a sequential arrangement of material in alphabetical or numerical order, according to which we may look up the subjects we need, and instantly. Plain mechanism is usually we find in the format and spirit of an index, and we never expect it to be exciting reading. The book under review, 25 T'ang Posts: Index to English Translations, provides us with something more than we expect. The main contents of this book are 3549 titles of poetry written by 25 poets of the T'ang dynasty (618-907). The 25 poets are arranged in alphabetical order, and under each of them are there his poems listed alphabetically according to the titles in Wade- Giles romanization. Each poem entry is assigned a serial number. It consists of the romanized title, the title in Chinese, the first line in the original, a detailed reference to the Ch'uan T'ang shih or other Chinese text, translator
