A clear and detailed statement of the origination of the whole patrimony of libraries and their collections, the practices usual in the libraries, the professional traditions, the problems and the strengths, is, at the very least, a good baseline for accurate understanding of the present and realistic calculations about the future. At the best, such a history can be a celebration of an affirmation of belief in the aspirations, struggles, triumphs, and even disappointments, of a profession and the institutions the profession serves. The magnificent four volume series, Histoire des Bibliothèques Franqaises, recently completed with the appearance of the present volume is all of these things. French librarianship now has an exposition of its past which is without any comparable rival throughout the world.
